Coastal Interiors: Modern Vintage Living Room

Coastal Interiors, Summer, Spring, Home Blog Posts, Interiors, Living Room, EdesignAnneke McConnell

Thanks for the social love and pins from my last post guys! It can be a little daunting to put yourself out there, and I'm so thankful for your support!! xoxo

As for today's design, I love a good mix of modern clean lines, a uncluttered but collected space, and definitely a beach vibe!  Incorporating inky blues, indigo, palm leaf green, etc. with pops of warm colors, gray and tan are my tendencies in design.

I fell in love with that navy brushstroke pillow (and more colors!) at first site and have always been a sucker for palm leaf ANYTHING like this pillow.

Using a clear coffee table and sofa you can see underneath really just visually lightens the feel of a room. I love the sofa in this design for that very reason!

The navy striped rug is a vintage find, so at the time of this post there is only one available.  Adding home decor with history and quality like this really adds life to a room - whether it's found online, passed down in the family, or found at an estate sale!

Then how FUN is that gold starburst pendant!!!  Lighting has such an amazing way of pulling an entire room together - one of my most popular post is on lighting which you can find HERE!

We are also ALL about versatility around here at Coastal Collective Co., and garden stools definitely fit the bill for that!! They are incredibly easy to move around, can be used inside or outside AND as a seat, footstool, or side table. We personally have a few and LOVE them!  I think the subtle variation in colors in this one in today's design are gorgeous!

With lazy, warm summer days not too far off (no, I didn't forget Spring!), I am loving EVERY item in this collection above!!!  Swing porches, garden stools, outdoor pillows galore. It's all gorgeous and inviting, not to mention comfortable for a night with friends and good food....and hopefully great conversation. ;-)

And to top it off with a few weekend faves. Clearly I have sunshine and warmer days on my mind!

Coastal Interiors: Cozy Reading Nook

Coastal Interiors, Edesign, Home Blog Posts, Interiors, Living Room, Valentine's DayAnneke McConnell

Today's design is Valentine's Day inspired with the month of love just around the corner. No matter what your plans are, a cozy nook to curl up with your favorite magazine or book is always a good idea.

When it comes to seasonal decorating, I love throwing in blankets (there's usually a stripe involved!), changing pillow colors, and hanging up some artwork that our kids make.   :-)

Coastal Kitchen Update: The Island Light

Coastal Interiors, Home Blog Posts, Interiors, KitchenAnneke McConnell

Last fall I decided to tackle the finishing up of our coastal kitchen makeover after a semi-grueling painting of the cabinets in the summer.  That's slightly dramatic, but if you're considering painting your cabinets yourself, yes, you'll definitely want to read through and learn from our experience

Here is a recap of each week:

Week 1: The Vision and Before Photos

Week 2: Painting the Cabinets

Week 3: Purging, Storage and Organization Solutions in the Kitchen

Week 4: Herringbone Tile

Week 5: Evaluating Progress

Week 6: Kitchen Reveal

Today's post is all about the selection of lighting for our island.  This is not a sponsored post, but I am fortunate to have been able to work alongside Lamps Plus who provided the light for our makeover.

Even as someone who LOVES design and decorating, I was running into some challenges (which I share more about in a bit) and the people at Lamps Plus were very kind and helpful in making a decision. Just sayin'! #greatcustomerservice

Here is the island light we ended up with!

So here just some design parameters we were working with when we were trying to find the "perfect" light.

  1. We wanted to have as many bulbs as possible. We went from 4-5.
  2. We wanted the light to be visually light so as not to block our view of the water, but also make a statement. This is super tricky in such a small space!
  3. The ceiling height of only 7.5' combined with the standard bar height on the island made the dimensions we had to work with very limited.  We needed something long and skinny, that remained as close to the ceiling as possible. Some island lights were visually perfect, but the way they mounted were not feasible so that's something to consider!
  4. Also, we did not want to rewire anything and stick with the single hole mount that was already there.
  5. Of course, we wanted a light that fit our beach house style, was easy to clean, and blended in nicely with the other textures and finishes. Our entry, living, dining, nook and kitchen are all one space!
  6. I love, love, LOVE how the light we chose has two metal finishes! The main metal portion is a dark bronze and the light socket is an antique bronze that ties in REALLY well with our hardware.

See it up close.  It really is the perfect fit!

Here you can see a better view of how the mount fits well with what we already had in place.

The light comes with extension rods, but we just don't have the vertical space for that.    Extension rods are a great thing when you have taller ceilings and want a light with a straight clean line versus a cord.

You can see how it would look here installed with the rods.  I love knowing that it is an option to add them if we moved or did a major renovation.

So here you can see the progression of lighting.

Before Painting: a simple bronze 4-light

After painting: we switched out the bronze for this simple silver 4-light when the bronze one had led lights that were an absolute PAIN.  We were also waiting on our new Roman Shades, which we now LOVE.  The shade below is actually a curtain panel I just tacked up for photos. That's blogger TRUTH right there! We currently use these curtains in our home office and master bedroom.

So there you have it!

Thanks again to Lamps Plus for a great experience working with them.  I've purchase their lighting over the years and truly love the variety of options they offer!  They have some great videos on Facebook to help show you how to bring all design elements together.  Video makes all the difference for me, so I really appreciate when brands make things easier and make videos to help us all out.

xo,

Anneke

Navy and White Living Room Design + A Style Update!

Fashion, Edesign, Coastal Interiors, Handbags, Interiors, Living Room, SummerAnneke McConnell

via: S.B. Long Interiors

Navy and white/cream tend to be my staples in design as classic coastal colors.  They are what ground a design at the core and then work out from there.  By adding plants and a pop of warm color, you're on your way to coastal design that not only welcomes the day to day, but is beautiful and functional as well.  As someone with three young kiddos, I swear by white slipcovered sofas that can be easily washed.  They are deceivingly impractical, but are more of a life-saver than anything!

Today's living room design features a classic roll arm sofa, gold metals, ikat, stripes, and bold saturated color.  That HUGE beautiful floor mirror (  is a favorite piece carved of mango wood in a lattice pattern and whitewashed finish.  I can never get enough whitewash you guys.  Back when I was painting furniture more frequently, it was my go-to. No surprise there!  Anyhow, this mirror would reflect the light of a room beautifully, making the room feel dramatically larger.

*For details on the items used in this design, click the photo or descriptions below.

On the fashion front, I think I found what is going to be my "go-to" sandals for Spring and Summer.  They are not too high, super comfortable for running around in general, and I prefer the wrapped front across the top of the foot for support.

On another note, I'm a bit ecstatic because I finally found a pair of black distressed denim that fits my petite, curvy self. Lol I rarely order jeans online because the struggle is REAL.  Imagine my surprise when these pair I ordered fit on the first try!

I instantly fell in love with this lace trim tee as soon as I tried it on. It's soft, has a good fit, can be tucked into the front of jeans, is long enough to wear with leggings, be layered, and more. Talk about a wonderfully versatile shirt!  The lace trim definitely makes me feel a little more fancy on a casual day with mom duties. ;-) Lol

If you haven't heard it yet today, YOU are beautiful. I mean it.

A lovely follower I know personally, also the mother of two kids (one a newborn!), left me a comment on instagram saying, "You give me hope I can look put together again someday!".

It instantly made me think of the days when our youngest was a baby and he literally spit up down my back every single day.  Every day you guys. Too much information?  Well.....that's just real life sometimes!

I loved fashion back then, but I certainly had a TON of extra tees stocked in our car!  I love sharing and inspiring, putting outfits and designs together, but don't think I don't have real life messes where I wear paint clothes and whatnot.

It's all about dressing for the occasion in my "rule book".

Have a LOVELY day!

xo,

Anneke
